Cart Exchange Frequently Asked Questions
Can I exchange my recycling or organics cart for a different size?
Yes. Please contact us to request an exchange. We offer 32, 64 and 96-gallon carts. Exchanges are done within a few weeks of request on your regular service day. Before requesting a smaller cart, be sure to give the larger one a try. Review the list of acceptable items in our Residential Recycling Guide and see if you can use the higher capacity. It is important to note that the large cart does not cost more than a smaller one.
Is there a charge to have a cart exchanged?
Every twelve months, we will do one exchange for no charge.
My 96-gallon recycling cart doesn’t fit in the space I have to store it. Will a smaller one?
The 64-gallon has almost the same footprint so might not fit either. Consider getting a 32-gallon or creating a bigger storage space.
What do I do with my old kitchen pale?
Place it in your old recycle cart for pickup or you may keep it for other uses if you'd like.
My new carts were delivered but you didn't take the old carts away. Why?
There will be another truck coming around later in the day to pick them up. Please leave them outside all day so they can be picked up. If they are not picked up by 6:00pm, put them out on your next service day and they will be picked up then. Or, you may contact us and we will try to pick them up the next business day.
When is my cart exchange date?
You should have received notification in the mail. If you did not, click here and contact us to find out your exchange week. You will also receive a reminder by phone a few days before your exchange is scheduled.
If I forget to put out my old carts on the exchange date, will I still receive the new carts?
Yes.
What should I do with the old carts if they weren't collected and I now have two sets of carts?
Use your new carts for disposal during the week and then place both the new and old carts on the curb your next service day. Your new carts will be serviced and your old carts will be removed by another truck. PLEASE MAKE SURE THE OLD CARTS ARE PUT OUT EMPTY.
Can I upsize or downsize now?
Yes. We will take your exchange request and pass it to Waste Management. They are responsible for cart exchange requests made prior to July 1. We will handle exchanges made after that.
I'm on vacation and will not be home during my cart exchange week. I have no one to pull my carts in and out for me. Can you exchange them when I return?
Yes, we can but not until July when we take over service. Give us a call a few days before your next service date to schedule a pick up and delivery.
I have backyard service, are you going to swap out my carts in the backyard?
Yes, we will be exchanging carts in the backyard. It may be later in the day but it will take place on your scheduled exchange day. If not placed in your backyard by 6:00pm on the exchange day, please contact us and we will send a representative to your house to move the carts.
I have a 64-gallon garbage cart and everyone on my street received new carts but me? Can you tell me why?
There are separate trucks delivering different size garbage carts. It may be that the truck carrying your size cart has not been in your neighborhood yet or needs to replenish its supply of carts and return to continue it route. Contact us after 6:00pm if the cart still has not been exchanged.
Why is my 20-gallon garbage cart so small?
Waste Management did not stock 20 gallon carts. They stocked 32 gallon carts and then placed an insert inside that reduced the capacity. We deliver true 20 gallon carts.
Can we keep our old WM carts.
The carts are the property of Waste Management and should be returned to them. If you keep them, we will not service or remove them at a later date.
My lid does not fit properly. There is a gap between the lid and the rest of the cart.
This is due to how the carts were transported. The lid will settle into place in time. Please give this process a couple of weeks.
I am a commercial customer, when will our bins be exchanged?
Commercial garbage and recycling bins will be exchanged starting the 1st week of June and continuing for several weeks. Watch your mail or click here for the first bit of information.
